birfday bash

Yesterday was my 22nd birthday.

It was really awesome. I love my friends!

(today I'm supposed to be doing everything I said I would do after my birthday, but I can't stop watching America's Next Top Model in my jim jams)

pride/party weekend

This past weekend was GAY PRIDE FESTIVAL 2012!

I love the pride festival, because it's SO MUCH FUN!! Last year was pretty fun, but this year I could DRINK LEGALLY, so no more secret sips of beers while everyone else gets into the outdoor dance club set up in Library Square. Although I never actually entered the festival (since it cost $10 and I was pretty much broke at that point), I DID get to dance, drink, and support the LGBT community, which is what's the most important.

The party part of the weekend started on Wednesday night, in my opinion, since it was BOOK CLUB! We discussed Joy School, drank wine, and ate DELICIOUS desserts out on the patio. I love all of the people in book club so much, I'll miss them when I'm gone :( I've grown up with 60% of the girls and women in that club. The funniest part of book club was someone casually bringing up 50 Shades of Gray, which I bought on a whim after graduation. It is basically Twilight with lots and LOTS of sex in it. Kinky sex. It is hilariously bad, but also really addicting (kind of like Twilight, what do you know!) So I let Megan borrow it for her trip to Costa Rica. Thursday night was when the real party started, since it was THIRSTY THURSDAY GIRL'S NIGHT!!! It started at Megan's and Kristy's house, where I arrived with my leftover jungle juice in slushee form. I met Kacie, one of Blayde's friends (Megan's boyfriend), who immediately saw 50 Shades of Gray (since I'd brought it over for Megan to borrow) and we launched into a discussion about the sex scenes. No better way to bond, in my opinion. Finally I told her I didn't think I'd ever met her, or if I had then I didn't remember her. After that we got drinks and sat down to talk some more.

At one point, Kacie couldn't remember my name. We had just talked about my job interview with the Audubon Center of the North Woods, so Audubon was the first thing she could think of. Cue everyone calling me Audubon for the rest of the night. The best part was that most everyone thought that she was calling me AUTOBAHN, like the roadway in Europe. This was after a couple of drinks. Drink count thus far: two vodka sprites, one Mike's Hard Lemonade, and two jungle juice slushees. Megan had two HUGE glasses of the slushees before she asked if there was everclear in there. Why yes there is. Once all the jungle juice was gone, we got an irritated phone call from Jill, who was meeting us there, asking where we were. We stocked up on hidden alcohol (hidden in our sweatshirts) and headed off to Trax. Halfway to the train station (which is two blocks away, keep in mind), we all stopped at a gas station to pee and piled into the one bathroom they had. Already so drunk. Finally we reached Trax and were off.

At one point on Trax, Kristy said she wanted someone to take a picture of all of us, but the only other person nearby was an old, slightly terrifying homeless man sitting across the way. She simply said, "NOPE" and decided we'd wait till we got to the stadium. When we reached the Ballpark stop, we stumbled towards the stadium and tried to find a scalper. We beat one into submission enough so that he'd sell the tickets to us for $5 instead of $7 and then we bought some soft drinks, which we took into the bathroom to doctor (except for Jerica, who did it right under her seat while pretending to rummage in her purse for a full five minutes).

Here in Utah, we have a lovely minor baseball team that has changed names about twenty different times, but has since settled on The Bees. Games are actually pretty damn boring, but are hilarious when you're trashed. We drank rum and cokes and vodka sprites while we heckled the visiting team, the Colorado Sky Socks. We heckled the shit out of them.

We did this anytime they played catch with each other (or practiced, whatever). We had nicknames for a few of them, including Bubba/Bubblicious, who tossed us bubblegum at one point while we made fun of them. We also got a lot of balls thrown to us.

One time I was staring at one of the pitchers, who glanced over at me. I raised my arms in an awkward "hello!" wave-type thing, and he threw me a baseball! I was a bit surprised, but Jill's dad (who snuck into girl's night somehow) told me to throw it to him, which I did, and he gave it to one of the kids nearby. Every single child sitting in the vicinity of us got a ball. GUESS THE FAMILY WHO WAS OFFENDED BY OUR DRUNKENESS MISSED OUT. By the end of the game, no one even knew what the score was, but apparently The Bees won. After the game, we decided to go do karaoke! I have never done karaoke before, but I was pretty drunk and completely psyched to go for it. For some reason, we all decided to RUN to Trax. I had to stop a block before the train, since I was so exhausted from running. Luckily, the train had not left yet, so we weren't left behind. While ON the train, Tasha started doing flips on the loops hanging from the ceiling. A boy from the group of guys across the aisle challenged her to a flip contest, betting that she couldn't do three flips in the row. We immediately said, "YOU'RE ON!" and started making a huge ruckus (oh yeah, it was a ruckus). So much so that two police officers decided we were having too much fun.

What a killjoy. He then started checking to make sure we had all paid fare (which I think is such bullshit, I mean I know we were breaking rules and whatnot, but that automatically qualifies us to be ticket worthy in their eyes). Unfortunately, Kacie was actually NOT a U of U student, so I slipped her my ID while I used my bus pass to show the police that I was a golden child. It was like a bad sitcom though because no one who was actually a legit U of U student had their bus pass work while everyone who was using a fake or an expire one totally had their's work. In an effort to save ourselves, Kristy told them that we'd ridden the bus earlier and they said that was probably why so many of the cards weren't working. Then it was our stop, fortunately. Ugh, police officers.

We walked a couple of blocks, while I tried to do my version of Parkour (jumping off of benches and trying to slide down concrete planters). We even did some planking and owling before we reached Bourbon House, our karaoke destination. We ordered some drinks and began planning what songs we should sing.

I was a lil bit drunk.

Our group name was "Jam Out With Your Clam Out" (all class, all the time). We sung "Wannabe" by Spice Girls, which is a staple, and then "Hit Me Baby One more Time" by Brit Brit. I have always been a little bit hesitant to do karaoke, even though I daydream about singing and dancing and preforming on stage all the time, just because I am naturally a little bit inclined to want to stay out of the spotlight. However, the other half of the time I'm sassy and funny and wanting to be the center of attention. So my two sides clash a lot. With alcohol in my system and my friends by my side though, I ROCKED IT. A girl even complimented me on my singing! This gave me the confidence to sing a song by myself. I searched through the book for Carrie Underwood's "Cowboy Casanova", but it wasn't there, so I opted for "Don't Impress Me Much" by Shania Twain, which I always said I would sing at karaoke. When I was trying to find the first song though. I couldn't remember Carrie Underwood's name, so I asked Tasha what the country blonde singer was and, after Taylor Swift, she miraculously said Carrie Underwood! Drunk connections. Finally, it was my turn.

It was so awesome! All the girls were right up front, singing along with me and dancing while I sung my heart out. It was such a head-rush, being in front of those people and seeing them sing along and enjoy my show! After I was done, I bowed elaborately and then high-school musical jumped off the stage. A random guy started singing a Queen song after I was done, to which I started doing some air guitar moves to. He then shouted into the mic, "COME ON AUTUMN, I NEED SOME BACK-UP AIR GUITAR UP HERE!" So OF COURSE I leapt on stage with him and played dramatic, exaggerated air guitar. I fell to my knees for the dramatic finale and did a fabulous flourish of strumming, for which people burst into applause. More inflation for my ego. I have a huge-ass bruise on my knee though, plus a little bit of skinlessness since I originally tried to slide across the stage, which doesn't work in shorts.

We watched some other tag teams sing songs, like Megan and Kristy singing
"L.O.V.E" by Ashlee Simpson. I decided I wanted to sing "Birdhouse in Your Soul" by They Might Be Giants, so I signed up for it and got up onstage. This time my friends were noticeably NOT there, so I sort of got nervous and didn't perform as much as I had before. Also, as fun as the song is, it's not such a well-known song so no one was singing along or dancing. When I was finished, I tried finding my friends to no avail. At first I was really upset and started crying because I was so angry that they'd ditched me. However, ten minutes later I FINALLY found them with no one else but the Colorado Sky Sox! THE MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL TEAM THAT WE HECKLED THE SHIT OUT OF SHOWED UP AT KARAOKE. What. WHAT? It was so hilarious and amazing to me that I forgot my anger and delved into conversation with them. We forced them into singing a couple of songs and I sung a rap duet with Tasha (that I had never heard before in my life) and then I sung Super Bass chorus for Lauren. So much fun! At around 2 AM we decided to start walking home, ignoring the Sky Sox'es pleas for us to continue hanging out with them (at your hotel? Yeah, no). On the way home, we stopped by the local taco cart stationed outside of Bar X and Megan and I shared a taco, which tasted fucking DELICIOUS (probably since we were drunk). While walking, some kids on bikes offered us a ride home on their handlebars, which was tempting since walking home took FOREVER. Once we got to Megan's and Kristy's house, Lauren drove me home. Not before going by McDonalds and purchasing chicken nuggets though! The leftovers of which we gave to a homeless man on the street. Thus ends an amazing Girl's Night.

Friday I was so hungover. SO hungover. For reals now. Gillian and I were supposed to hang out, so I tentatively asked her if she wanted to hang out later that night. Fortunately for me, she said she had a last-minute engagement, so I spent Friday night in a stupor watching Rupaul's Drag Race. So good.

My favorite is JuJu

SATURDAY, however, was a true and blue PRIDE day! Well, the second half of it. The first half was spent shopping with Natal! We went to Old Navy and Barnes and Noble, where I bought a shirt for myself and presents for Jill (since it was her graduation party that night) and a little cute sea creature book for me. Then we headed to the mall to go to GAP, where Natal bought cute, colored shirts and pants and I got a scarf for Gillian (since it was her birthday on Thursday!) Then we got some breadsticks and a calzone thing to share and tried to find some plain T-shirts for Natal. We didn't find any really, but it was still a damn successful/productive shopping day! She dropped me off, we tried to fix my phone's issues and I taught her about blogger (since she started a new blog!), I prepared Jill's present, and then my mom and I headed to Jill's party. We hung out, drank Shock Top and Mike's, ate A LOT of spinach dip, visited, told jokes, and enjoyed the evening. After we left, Gillian and I met up and went to Green Pig with the intention to get some food. It was SO CROWDED though, since it was Pride weekend, so we went up to the roof and got some drinks. We sat at the bar and hung out until we decided to head to Johnny's on Second, since Gillian's friend's boyfriend was playing a show there.

Things that happened:
-found out that Phil from Modern Family was at Bar X, which was next-door
-got some kind of gross nachos from a bartender who kept telling people with me that my name was Autumn. Pretty sure they know, dude
-$4 beers and shots! I was supposed to be the DD, but I accidentally drank a lot...and was drunker than Gillian. I got two shots and beers, cheap whiskey!

-Dylan, Tiffany, Elliot, and Megan came and joined us and shared in our nachos
-Dylan kept saying he didn't want to go to the bathroom because he was afraid he'd get date raped to death. I told him to smear the nachos on his pants to deter such attacks. He suggested making a chastity belt out of knives
-listened to dubstep, which we assume is alien communication
-Megan's boyfriend was a good guitarist
-I convinced Elliot that there are natural wells of whiskey that bubble up from the Earth's core and that Johnny's on Second was located on top of a prime one, which is why their shots were so cheap. He believed me
-Dylan and I discussed our favorite things (aka the worst things). These include:

Sushi carts (especially when they are called "Fish Lips")

Public water

Waiting in line

Ball pits (specifically, queefing in ball pits, which Dylan assures me he does on a daily basis)

Syringes full of drugs. FULL of drugs (this one was more like something we just kept saying throughout the night because of something I said, though I'm not sure what it was...)

aaaand the last one is pink sores. NOT going to include a picture, but it started because Megan said something about her "pink sore" to Dylan, who responded with fake throwing up. I thought she said "pink sword", which I thought was a hilarious word for penis, so I kept telling people to sheath their pink sword. Finally, Dylan figured out what the hell I was talking about and corrected me. Which I'm sort of unhappy about, since pink sore is SO GROSS. We made a lot of comments about it that involved gross adjectives. After watching Megan's boyfriend's show for awhile, we decided to all go to Club Jam (a gay club) for some dancing before last call. Dylan's boyfriend drove us there, and we stopped for a second to pick up cigarettes for the boys. At one point, we saw a group of gay guys, which Dylan proclaimed was scientifically called, "a gaggle of gays". And then he kept saying, "speaka de homo?" which I thought was SO FUNNY (prolly because I was drunk as shit). We got to the club and we immediately started DANCING.

We danced, we went outside for air (since it was SO hot and we were dripping with sweat) and met up with Gillian's friend Braden and his boyfriend to hang out, we danced some more to some really fun songs, I went to the bathroom to find an incredibly drunk girl peeing in the garbage can, so I guarded the door for her, and we topped the night off with one more song. At one point, a guy tried to lead me over to him by grabbing my hips, but I gestured that I wanted to dance with my friends so I left him and danced with Dylan, Gillian, and John again. When I looked behind me a couple of minutes later, the same guy was making out with another guy. PRIDE WEEKEND! When we were done dancing, we left the club with some waters, dropped Dylan and John off at their next party, and then went home and crashed.

The next morning was the PRIDE PARADE! Basically it's an amazing parade that supports the LGBT community that runs all over downtown. Last year, the Grand Marshall was ROSEANNE BARR, one of my favorite people EVER. This year it was Dustin Lance Black, who I wasn't really sure who he was, but whateva. It was still an amazing parade and I got a ton of pictures of it. I'll post the best ones in the next post. I got a killer sunburn, Taffy made friends with the gay couples behind us with rainbow umbrellas that gave her shade, we all got a bunch of free stuff, and at the end of the parade we ate sandwiches at Toasters and accidentally spilled Dr. Pepper on Taffy. WHOOPS! The rest of the day was spent napping and going to the POOL, where I swam and played with two little girls I made friends with, and then hanging out with Gilly and Mia and watching Chocolat. Thus ends an AMAZING weekend! I am so glad I got to go to the parade, since I might not have, considering I technically had to work (but it turns out I didn't, and I still got paid!). I got to be there to support all of my gay and lesbian friends and it was so touching to see the group of LDS people marching in the parade with signs of support and love for the LGBT community in their sunday clothes. It was also amazing to see everyone else not afraid of being who they are and to support their loved ones and neighbors. I am so, so happy I was a part of that.

weekend update with Otter

These have been some busy, productive, and fun past couple of days. I went to the Senior Sendoff on Thursday night because I was desperate to win Disneyland day passes that you could win if you pre-registered for the event. It was a dinner/speaker event with really crappy food and no booze, BUT I did make some new friends (to sit with, since I knew NO ONE THERE. I seriously know no graduating seniors that are not bio students. Welcome to the U of U) and the punch was pretty good. I did not win the Disneyland passes, unfortunately, but I did end up winning a super comfortable U sweatshirt and a hilarious Huntsman Center (aka the giant boob) figurine. So in the end, worth it. Also I finally talked to the career center and got signed up for their job-finding and resume writing services due to the dinner, so it sort of forced me to continue planning my future.

Friday night I went to the Benefit El Salvador silent auction at the 15th St. Gallery. It was a super fun event that Lisa was volunteering at, whom I adore and hadn't seen in forever. Natal came with me, and we were soon joined by Gabi and Bree. Basically the evening was spent being fancy with our wine and beer, eating delicious food and desserts, and perusing the items for sale. Natal and I bid on a year's worth of Color Me Mine painting, but were outbidded, unfortunately. At one point I asked the guy at the bar to give me their classiest beer and they gave me an Ipa, a semi-locally brewed beer from the Moab Brewery. So I learned about a new beer, got drunk, ate bananas and chocolate, talked to a lot of friendly peeps, got to see my franz, and was fancy. Then I ended up going home early instead of going out with everyone to watch Candyman and go to bed. WOO!

Saturday was spent making graduation announcements (or at least writing on them, since I don't have the prints of the pictures I'm putting in them yet), playing Starfox Adventures (which my brother bought for me at an independent gaming shop, yay!), drawing bird pokemon, trading a Seel to my HeartGold game to train, doing bird care, and ultimately just relaxing (except for the bird care part). OH MAN I forgot how fun Starfox is! I love the dinosaurs. Except for parts of it make me want to MURDER SOMEONE and I'm still not good at them, like the racing part at the beginning when you're trying to save Tricky. My brother did it for me after I failed four times in a row.

Goddamnit, Tricky

Today was spent trying to go to a play I need to attend for my online drama class, but the Internet LIED to me and so I ended up at a completely locked theater. So instead I did bird care and just played more Starfox Adventures all day (completely logical) until my friend's birthday party at the park! It was a surprise birthday party so we all yelled, "SURPRISE!" when she was still 200 feet away and then we awkwardly waited for her to actually arrive at the designated party site. I got to see Coopers Hawks and Brewer's Blackbirds, we played frisbee (Ale's dad is a BEAST at frisbee), ate cookout foods, got into a cake fight, played kickball, and I hung out with this guy who has the same dslr I'm pretty sure I'm going to get for graduation (fingers crossed) so I asked him for photography tips. I was originally only going to stay for an hour and then head to a play I have to attend for class, but I ended up staying until sunset, which is when apparently a bunch of little kids infiltrate the park without any adult supervision. At one point I wondered aloud what they were doing here and if they were wild and the guy who was with us was like, "They're ours now" so I tried to lure them in with soda. Aka not really because that's creepy. I just pretended to. To be funny.

After park shenanigans, I watched 20/20 with my mom while I did homework (on time this time, since I keep forgetting to do my online homework on sunday night) and revised a short story I wanted to submit for a creative writing contest (which I submitted half an hour ago, woo!) and then I watched The Simpsons forever. The end.

And that was my weekend!

The best picture from this weekend (also one of the only ones) is this picture of graffiti I took near the theater. It reminds me of in Super Mario Sunshine where you can spray a graffiti O or an X somewhere and a blue coin will pop out of its counterpart on the other side of the island.

(I tried to find a picture of it in the game but failed so I GUESS YOU'RE JUST GOING TO HAVE TO TAKE MY WORD FOR IT)

ring in the new year

It is now January 2 aka high time to write about my amazing New Year's Eve and what this past year has been like. Some of it's good, some of it's bad, and I realize I need to put in a lot of work in 2012 to be happier and less scared of everything (especially since graduation is coming up). So here's what's up with 2011.

In 2011 I:
-tried to be more outgoing and less afraid of meeting new people (worked in some cases, not in others)
-turned 21
-went to my beach house for the first time in five years TWICE and loved every. single. second of it.
-developed my photography and photoshop skills
-moved out of my apartment and back in with my parents
-fell in love
-got rejected, which broke my heart a little bit, but I also survived
-collected data for my own independent project and wrote a paper on my research
-sent in papers for publishing consideration to science journals
-got on the Dean's List both semesters (yay!)
-tried to be a lion hearted girl (once again, worked in some cases, not so much in others)
-attended less football games than I would have liked due to illnesses that also cost me my favorite holiday, unfortunately (good thing it didn't show its face this December)
-started writing again for fiction writing and continued to write
-watched The X-Files (after much prompting from Maddeh) and discovered that I adore it and possibly share a symbiotic relationship with that show
-also discovered my other new favorite show Phineas and Ferb
-read some good books because I joined a book club put together by Megan so that we could be adults and get drunk in a classy way
-participated in my first scientific conference and presented a poster
-went to Disneyland again and had a bombfly time (bombfly was our word of New Year's Eve) and also got GLOW CUBES MOFO
-became a more responsible drinker, learned my limits (sort of)
-tried to be more zen and care less about what people think, which I think I succeeded at. I need to work on it more though.

So I always make resolutions even though I rarely keep them, but instead of resolutions this time I'm going to make goals because goals are important. As I step into my future and enter the "real world", I need some goals to keep my grounded and remind me of my future. For so long I have lived only in the moment to preserve sanity and remain happy and quell anxiety about the future. I've had to accept the hard fact this break that I can no longer do that and need to think about my future. So these are some goals for 2012.

Goals for 2012
-treat my body better. I had a "dressmergency" on New Year's Eve where I tried on the dress that I had planned to wear on New Year's Eve for several months and...it didn't fit. Well it did fit, it just did not look cute. At all. So I'm going to say what I've said before: eat better, exercise. But mostly, just treat my body well. I want to curb emotional eating (ESPECIALLY stress eating) and stop drinking as much soda (even though I love it) and eat smaller portions. I like more vegetables now so I should utilize that. Also I took a break from aerobics last semester and it was definitely a mistake, so I'm going to do that again as well as go to the field house more and maybe even start swimming again (since scuba reminded me how much I love the water. I forget that sometimes in the winter).
-make plans for the future. Utilize the career center, ask for letters of recommendation (and don't be afraid to do so, stop getting intimidated by professors), look up options for the future, apply for graduation and research honors, maybe ask if I can keep my job in the lab for the summer so I can stay here to study for the GRE and play a little.
-GO SEE A THERAPIST and get anxiety medication. Little things don't work anymore, it is very apparent that I have just been squashing all stress down and ignoring it rather than working through it. Shit went down this winter break because it all came to a head and I flipped my shit. It was embarrassing and uncomfortable and I hated it. I know this isn't a very happy "goal", but I really do need something to help me break through this terrible barrier of fear. I wrote in my sketchbook a couple of nights ago that my life is ruled by fear and I hate it. I guess I should at least be proud that I go through with SOME stuff despite being afraid, but overall I'm sick of it and want to at least try medication as I go through this last, extremely stressful stretch of college and future planning.
-like who you are. Lately I haven't liked who I am. It's sad, but true. All this stress, fear, my body image issues, etc. really have compiled into Otter being an upset, stressed out, tired human being. SO I'm going to do things like the two goals mentioned above that involve anxiety medication and exercising more (which both will help with anxiety I think), but I am ALSO going to try my hand at meditating or doing yoga as well as realizing that I do not have to compare myself to other people. Society makes this hard I think, since we are mostly taught to compare ourselves to other people and inevitably you will be out somewhere with your friend and the friend will get complimented on how pretty/skinny/whatever they are while you are left standing awkwardly in silence (happens to me more often than naught). But I'm going to try and stop by both feeling better about myself anyways via aforementioned stress and fat-reducing techniques and by realizing that I am me and no one else when it comes to social situations. I like to be social and I have my group of awesome friends. I am a person who loves to have a small group of best friends verses a huge group of semi-okay friends and that is totally fine. It's okay if I don't want to go to a party and I shouldn't feel obligated to go because I feel like everyone else is partying more than me. It's an unhealthy way to feel I think, so I'm going to work on it.
-go outside, be wild, be free. Hear the call of the wild and answer it.

I wrote this thing last year when I was feeling more vivacious and better about myself, but I still really like it (I changed 2011 to 2012).

My goal in life is to be a lion-hearted girl.
I want to have experiences.
Good or bad, they're still experiences
I want to go on adventures and not be afraid to try new things
Forget regret (stole it)
I want to live in the now but not be so afraid of change that I forget the future
I want to be stronger, faster, smarter so I can be what I can be
I want to be wild and free and not care who knows it because I am beautiful
I am amazing
I'm perfect just the way I am
This is my mantra for 2012 and now and forever

Okay let's continue on to the POSITIVE things in life! I was a wreck two weeks ago, that's true, but this past week has actually been very excellent, albeit busy, and also I had an amazing New Year's Eve! I'll just write about New Year's right now and get to the other stuff in another post (which will be my 100th!)

Our New Year's started with dress shopping, because I wanted to find a sparkly fancy dress for New Year's Eve. First I went over to Raphael's house and hung out with her while she cleaned a little, since we were planning on having a New Year's Eve afterparty at her house. Our friend Shoshi came over and we headed out to Brickyard, which has a selection of stores I thought might have some sparkly stuff. So here's the news: if something has sequins sewn all over it, it will inevitably cost your first-borne child to buy. I had already discovered this at Express just a week before, but I thought maybe I could find something cheaper at these non-department stores. Nope. We went to Kohl's, which was just confusing because there didn't even appear to BE a womens section for awhile. Then we found J-Lo's collection, which did have quite a bit of sequiny stuff, but all of it was 80+ dolla so that wasn't going down. We tried Dress Barn (which turned out to not be a giant warehouse full of dresses and possibly livestock, as I originally thought) and then Ross, where Shoshi and Claire had luck whereas I did not. So the good news is that at least the shopping venture benefited others even though I did not end up finding anything. We went back to Claire's house and Claire and Shoshi got ready there while I ran back to my house to gather my things. My mom ended up pleading with me to do my hair, so I said she could curl it (since she can get the back and I can't and also she probably does a better job). While the curling iron heated, I had my dressmergency and finally resolved to wear the same dress I wore last New Year's Eve, a black cotton sundress from Old Navy that is my rendition of the "little black dress". I paired it with black tights, a gemstone necklace I wore to Prom in high school, and my new pearl earrings I got for Christmas. After my mom curled my hair, I threw on a quarter-sleeve wrap (which was really cute) and my black high heels and high-tailed it to Claire's (Claire and Raphael are the same person, in case you didn't know that. I just realized I reverted back to Claire).

When I got there, I threw my pillow, jim jams, sleeping back, and our bottle of emergency vodka into her room and we went to Shoshi's house to get some dinner. I'd never been to Shoshi's house or met her family, both of which were super cool. Her house was full of color: shawls, bandanas, wall hangings, pillows, furniture...everything was brightly colored just the way I like it. There were also tons of art pieces, pictures, different plants (and cacti!), and fairy lights strung everywhere. I'd like to think they're up all the time, but it might have just been because it was Christmas. I want my house to look like hers does someday, because it was so quirky and cute. Anyways, we made our way inside and I introduced myself before we sat down to a dinner of empanadas and chilli. It was really good food and fun to get to know her family. Her little brother (10) is adorbs. Her sister (who I believe is a freshman or sophomore in college) was also there with her friend, then it was me, Claire, Shoshi, and Shoshi's mom (please excuse my horrific grammer). Her mom was a bit...intimidating at first. She's a literature professor up at the U and is just a bit brusk because that's her personality. I got over it quickly though (see, I can do things that scare me!) and we talked about what we hoped for in the new year and about what we want for our futures. Shoshi's little brother made an amazing speech where he stood on his chair and kept repeating, "And I your greatness comes after HER greatness, that shall come after HER greatness, which shall come after MY greatness", etc. It was so funny, I can't explain it. He was also wearing what looked like a long-sleeved shirt beneath a short-sleeved shirt, but when Shoshi lifted the sleeve of his short-sleeved shirt it was apparent that the "sleeves" were just arm-length. It was hilarious. Then we ate oreo cheesecake communally from the pie tin, passing it around and scooping out spoonfulls (Maia, Shoshi's sister, had an idea that we should eat from it with only our faces, but it was vetoed) and also chocolate-covered expresso beans to pep us up for the evening ahead.

We were having a GREAT time until the actual party guests began to arrive. Shoshi's mom was having her own shindig with distinguished guests such as professors from the U and presidents of various committees and I bet a congressman or two showed up later in the night. Her first guests were a married couple of professors. We were subjected to long stories about their accomplishments in the senate that they thought were hilarious (though no one else thought that).

Finally, I stood up and announced I was going to the restroom just as Claire announced that her brother texted her and we needed to go and Shoshi announced that she was just going to leave. So we made our escape. Claire and I headed to her parents' house to pick up her brother, who was going to come with us but ended up wussing out (I say that, really he said he was drunk or hungover or something else, I'm not really sure) so we left without him BUT with some delicious items for breakfast. Her parents were being really cute and taking Claire's picture (because she had on a fabulous sparkly dress) and me too even though my outfit deffo wasn't as cute as hers. Her dad gave me a firm handshake to give me luck in the new year. It was good times. So at this point it was ten and I wasn't quite sure what Megan and Kristy were up to (whose party I went to last year) so we ended up just commencing the party two hours earlier than we'd intended. But it was the best decision ever, because the party was SO MUCH FUN!

We got back to Claire's house and found that her roommate Mark had invited over a bunch of his friends already, so when we arrived we were like SHOTS SHOTS SHOTS SHOTS SHOTS SHOTS (you know, like this) and we took seven shots in three minutes. Let me repeat that: SEVEN SHOTS IN THREE MINUTES. We had to try every single flavor of drink we'd gotten, you see.

Plus an extra of the pink to wash it all down because that's our favorite. We managed to convince one of Mark's friends, Tyler, to come take shots with us when we got to the rum since he loves rum and then he took some other shots with us too. I overheard someone being like, "Your roommates are crazy" as I tried to combat Claire's cheers for deforestation with conservation and ocean cleanliness. I bet they thought we were cool. They were busy playing picture telephone (which is a HILARIOUS game), which is when Gillian and Mia arrived! At this point I convinced Girr to come with me to the 7-11 (or the Sev, as I call it) so we could get some beer for beer pong. So we headed out into the frosty air, me wearing Mia's combat boots she'd brought over and Claire's fabulous (faux) jaguar fur coat because I only had high heels with me and hadn't brought a coat because I am a fool. The Sev is only a block away, so we got some Pabst and then headed back, passing a group of people along the way and exchanging "HAPPY NEW YEAR'S!" exclamations (as well as them saying "YEAH PBR!"). Once we'd dragged the beer back, we prepared to play Classy Beer Pong (I made it classy by drawing bow-ties on the cups and then writing CLASSY on both the water cups).

The first teams up were Claire and I verses Mia and Tyler. Tyler was damn good at beer pong, definitely better than both Claire and I combined. I got a couple of their cups before there was a long lull where none of us sunk any cups. Then Tyler started kicking ass.

At this point, I was to full-blown loud drunkenness, where I excitedly scream at everyone. At one point someone told their friend (I believe his name was Austin) that I worked at a science lab at the U, which is when I calmed down enough to tell him that I worked with pigeons and their parasites. The only thing I got from his lab is that he cuts open reptiles. I was also to the ADD point of drunkenness, where I halfway listen to things people tell me (even though I asked them about it) and then I have to go do something else VERY QUICKLY. I'm so annoying when I'm drunk I'm sure, but at least I avoided my cat-wolf drunkenness this time (that would have resulted in even more damaged knees, but I'll get to that). At one point Dylan told me that he didn't expect me to suck so much and I flipped him off. I was a little hellion (ish). We lost eventually and so we finished off the cups and I went to take some more shots, trying to force others to take shots with me. At this point it was about twenty minutes until midnight, so some of us gathered in the kitchen to prepare.

Actually, the real reason we were in the kitchen is because I saw this and had to go in and take a picture of it because I thought it was SO HILARIOUS.

LEMONY! In Phineas and Ferb there's this balloon named Balloony that has a TERRIFYING face on it, so Mark drew this face on the lemon juice and we named him LEMONY.

Then we ended up just taking a bunch of pictures.

We prepped our champagne for the big event of 2012. Don't even worry, I brought over my GLOW CUBE.

Jimmy and his brother came over to join in the festivities.

We counted down until midnight and then screamed "HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!" and toasted and drank our champagne. Then we drank quite a bit more champagne.

Celebrations ensued

Tyler wanted to go to the Sev for cigarettes, so Girr and I accompanied him again. He insisted we also bring a sober person, so we also brought Jimmy's brother. We did linksie-ups and walked down to the Sev again. I talked to Jimmy's brother about his future a lot and tried to make him feel better about his recent breakup. Basically I was like a "Dear Abby" the entire night, albeit a very distracted one. Once we arrived back at the house, we found out Alibus had arrived so I immediately asked her how her trip to Colorado went (because she went on a short road trip with her sister and her friends) but then told her "WAIT I HAVE TO GO OUTSIDE WITH TYLER BE RIGHT BACK" and I went outside with Tyler while he smoked, which I used to do with Maddie and it made me miss her :(

Wow I'm telling this story like I am still in my drunken distracted state. Basically, the rest of the night (as far as I can remember) was composed of us all dancing.

We did the wobble, which Shoshi taught us, we danced to 80s music (provided by Gillian), and then we started dancing to music Alice was DJing. The songs I remember dancing to the most were "Party Rock" by LMFAO and "Waka Waka" by Shakira, both were SO MUCH FUNNNN! We all danced a shit ton though, I would sit down for like two seconds to try to talk to Kit or someone and then I would just get up and leave to go dance some more. My poor friends. Dancing is one of my favorite things to do though. Mix drinking and dancing and it is my ULTIMATE favorite thing. Well one of them. We danced and danced and danced. Basically that's the rest of what I remember until I saw that my brother had texted me at like 3 AM to ask if I needed a ride home. I jumped at the chance to sleep in my own bed, since my back gets effed up when I sleep on floors, and so he picked me up at 3:30 after some more dancing. Then I went back home and snuggled into bed.

So that was my New Year's Eve! It was amazing and I got to do everything I love to do: go on drunken adventures (aka on beer/cigarette runs because usually I am not allowed to go out in public due to my previously mentioned cat wolf hybrid version of drunkenness), dancing like mad, drinking, playing beer pong, and hanging out with a lot of my biffles. It was so good <3 (my knees and legs absolutely KILLED the next day, so it was mainly a recovery day with no mention of alcohol or heavy activity. They still hurt today, though less so) Happy new year everyone! May 2012 be an amazing year.

partiespartiesallthetime

I have been up to SUCH THINGS since I last actually wrote a story about my life in this blog.

First of all, a couple of weeks ago my mom told me she had a surprise for me. And that surprise was THE WENDOVER PARTY BUS.

Basically you're picked up in a parking lot in Murray and then driven the 2ish hours to Wendover. You get there around 8 PM and then the bus picks you back up at 2 AM. It's entirely convenient because you can get trashed and not have to worry about driving home. My mom, aunt, and I all boarded the party bus a couple of Saturdays ago and discovered the magic that was the Wendover party bus. We played Bingo aboard the bus and, at one point, I won and received Sour Dots and a coupon for %20 off my next party bus visit. When we got there we ate free food at the buffet, received free drinks with our coupons, played video poker and this amazing game I found called HOOT LOOT where I won $15 and then just played with that the rest of the night (I kept losing and winning and losing and winning but in the end I actually went home with money since my mom had given me all her quarters), we sat at the bar and listened to this awesome cover band that was playing soul music while we drank vodka lemonades, I got drunk off an AMF (Adios Motherfucker), danced with some amazing drunk 50 year old ladies who were all wearing Pink Floyd tour shirts, some creepy old guys wanted to dance with me, my mom told them to back off, we played BlackJack, and then it was time to go home. The drive back was actually pretty miserable, since I can't sleep on buses, but all in all it was a super fun time. Now to go with franz and go WILD.

Another thing that happened was Raphael's Birthday. Last year she had a rum and waffle party (which was so much fun) and this year she decided to class it up with a wine and cheese party. The football game was that day (we played Washington State), so first I went over to Blade's house to pre-game at about 2 PM. Three rum and cokes and a beer later I was in a very good place. Megan had bought this whipped cream that was alcoholic and orange flavored (I thought was cheese whiz), which she directly spouted into my mouth when I was least expecting it. IT WAS TERRIBLE. GOD IT WAS AWFUL. Tearfully, through a mouthful of it, I said, "It tastes like watery gatorade" and then washed it down with PBR. What can I say, I am a classy bitch. Oh my GOD it was terrible.

Kristy kept taking pictures of us all and Blade and Alec told her that she did took pictures at every home game, do we really need pictures of us all doing the same stupid things each game? Yes. Yes we do. Our friend who's a photo editor for the Chrony (school newspaper) told us that one of his fellow editors told him that he got a picture of some asshole flipping off the cheerleads. Turns out the picture is of our entire MUSS group and Blade is the asshole. It is the BEST picture. Basically every single guy in the picture (except for Blade) is staring at the cheerleader's vagina while Blade just flips her off, looking elated. Megan is standing with her hands on her hips, looking up at Blade while Kristy and I just look WASTED. They're going to get the picture blown up for $10 and then hang it on their wall, it's so good. We walked up to the tailgate two hours before the game started, where I played beer pong and won sunglasses and a shirt YES! DREAM REALIZED. Then we got food and made our way up to the real tailgates, where I found Lisa and Gabi and drank even more. The game itself was uneventful, as we lost HARDCORE. It was so painful. Final score was 31-14. WHYYYY UTAH? Hopefully this Saturday's game will be better. I left five minutes before the game ended because a) I was bored and wanted to get to Raphael's party and b) we were getting our asses handed to us on a platter. As I was leaving I realized that I didn't know how to exit the stadium. That's how drunk I was. Luckily, I passed by Grace and Karl (Grace screamed when she saw me and we both embraced and had an epic reunion, since we hadn't seen each other in weeks) as I was trying to get out and they helped me aka I only had to climb a few stair up to reach the exit.

Raphael only lives a block away from the stadium so I was the first to arrive at the party. Since I hadn't eaten dinner yet, I immediately dove into the cheese and bread and then started downing wine. OH P.S. earlier that day I went to buy wine for the party and it was my first time purchasing alcohol legally by myself. I totally looked like I was sketch though, since my hands were SHAKING as I handed her my license and then I almost knocked all of the wine off the counter when I tried to help scoot them over to the cash register. Anyways, the alcohol fairy paid Raphael a little visit before the football game. More people arrived and the party kicked off, though I am proud to say that this time I did NOT pass out and I didn't ride her chair like a horse. Like I did last time. In fact, people complimented me on how rational I was being. Even though every time I said that the glass of wine I was on would be my last, it would somehow get refilled. And then with champagne. And then with shots of vodka. Hm. We watched Jurassic Park, where I screamed because I was so excited to be watching Jurassic Park. We conversed. We probably did other stuff too, but mostly drank more and stole each other's chairs when someone got up. At about three I decided I was sober enough to drive home, so Patti and I took our leave and walked the four blocks over to where I'd parked my car earlier. I'm glad Patti walked with me, because I was pretty creeped out as I walked through a suburban street completely devoid of lights. There were a surprising amount of people out and about for three though. Patti and I stuffed her bike in the car and then I drove her to her apartment complex, where we spent ten minutes trying to pop her wheel back onto her bike. Fortunately, some guys came and helped us out and then went on their merry way to party some more. Hurray! Thus ends a great night.

The next day was Oktoberfest up at Snowbird. It's basically a pitiful representation of the real festival that serves beer and german food, has tram rides and an alpine slide, a mechanical bull, and several booths of commercially made items. I was really hungover from the day before, so when Natal and I went up there I really wasn't feeling up to drinking anything. The biggest reason I wanted to go was to see the fall colors up the canyons. It was GORGEOUS and well worth the drive, though Oktoberfest itself was a bust. I took pictures while we were up there, but many are blurry (since I took them out the car window) and they're all on my camera anyways. It was beautiful up there, I want to go again soon (just to see the colors and maybe to look at stars, though it's getting colder).

The other big news in my life is that I've joined a book club! Megan and Kristy created it and so far we're read The Help for September. Our meeting was super successful, we drank wine and discussed the book and then verged into other topics such as women in society, rape culture, etc. It was intense. I'm hosting October book club and am having a Halloween themed party at the end of the month. We're reading 'Salem's Lot, which I just barely started and so far I really like it! It's hard to try and read when I have stuff like Hocus Pocus waiting for me to watch it though. Tonight was heavenly because, while it rained/snowed outside, I sat inside and watched Halloween movies (aka Hocus Pocus) in front of my heater while drinking hot chocolate spiked with Bailey's. It was AMAZING.

Tomorrow our lab is taking its lab picture (aka family portrait) and it's going to be western themed. Thus, I am going as a cattle rustler. Earlier today there was an email concerning the lab picture and it was basically the best thing I've ever read. This was the gist of it:
B: We're taking the lab photo tomorrow. Bring a western costume or I'll be forced to photoshop one onto you.
D: Oh good, let's see S photoshopped into a saloon maid outfit!
K: That doesn't require photoshopping...
S: I hate all of you. Love, S.
S: And by all of you, I mean D and K.
D: Dear all, in addition to lab meeting tomorrow we will be holding a seminar on how to write a complete sentence, as even our second year grad students do not have a handle on it.

I died.
