shorebirds and sunlight

Here comes the riveting conclusion to my Monterey Bay Aquarium series (finally...)

10 things I love monday

IT'S STILL MONDAY FOR ONE MORE MINUTE (though it won't be by the time I'm done with this post...), so here's 10 Things I Love!

1)

Bat-Eared Foxes. They are amazing because they are like half bat, half fox, which are two of my favorite mammals. I went to the zoo with my friend Mark yesterday and we visited ALL the animals and I talked a lot about each and every one. Thank God he's okay with it.

And the most important one of all which kind of sums up this whole experience...

Twitch Plays Pokemon. I can't even. This is just so amazing; basically 70,000 people are all controlling the one playable character in Pokemon Red in an anarchical system where they type in commands. It seems easy enough, but when EVERY SINGLE PERSON is typing in a different command, it kind of...takes Red forever to do anything. At all. I occasionally play (but usually become infuriated and I don't have time for that shit, I have a life...ish), and usually check in anytime I'm on the computer just to marvel at the progress they've made or to laugh because they're still stuck on Route 9. One of my favorite things about this entire experiment is the mythos created by it. Here's a great article describing all of the political, religious, and hilarious elements this game has created. I love it.

Macaroni and cheese. I have had entirely too much mac and cheese these past few days. I've had the creamiest, tangy version complete with bits of crispy bacon and tiny slices of tomato from Corner Bakery, the homemade macaroni cooked right in front of you at the zoo and drizzled with homemade cheddar cheese sauce, topped with shredded cheese and bread crumbs, and my favorite Annie's white cheddar macaroni and cheese, where I pretend to eat tiny sea-shells and drink pomegranate limeade alongside the meal.

4)

Re-discovering old poetry and prose from college and reading through it while I pack. Lord, is some of it bad. But others I actually find funny or clever and insightful. This is why I like to keep all of my old sketchbooks and journals.

5)

My new saw-whet owl mug I painted! I love it, I'm so glad I went for the realistic look instead of just painting it cute colors. I did get to incorporate mint on the inside and on the bottom, plus I wrote the latin name for the saw-whet along the rim, so I'm incredibly happy with it!

6)

Spring sunsets, the promise of what's to come. It's been beautiful the past few days, and it's going to continue being good weather for the next couple of days. I have to pack for them (ugh), but hopefully I can get out to the lake and into the mountains during these spells!

7)

Paint Nite, lavender lemonade martinis, and my new owl friend Martini! Paint Nite is a super cool local event where an artist hosts around twenty painters and different bars and teaches them to paint! We went to an event where we painted owls! Mom named hers Horace, Donna (my aunt) named hers Agatha, and I named mine Martini in honor of the delicious martinis I was drankin! I got pretty crunk and so I chose a weird color scheme for my owl, but we're friends now. Also I was pretty much bffs with the artist teaching us how to paint, since she'd come into Color Me Mine previously to paint.

8)

Already having found a place to live in Texas. It's taken away a lot of stress (well, hopefully it works out and someone isn't living in my room when I get there...), plus I get my own bathroom! YES!

9)

Going out to lunch and shopping with my Oma! We've been trying to plan this Oma-granddaughter date FOREVER and finally got around to it! We went to Trio for lunch and got focaccia paninis with pesto aioli and bacon on them, as well as red pepper and potato soup, and then went shopping for clothes. I got a lot of pairs of paints since I am almost out of wearable pants (plus some PANTS for the new job!), a black sweater with golden dinosaurs on it, and then got some DQ before heading back home. It was a six hour long festival and Oma was exhausted.

10)

and my favorite

Sweet cockatiel noises. I love them so much, and my bb boy ♥

Other great things
-Disney movie nights with Gabi
-Morph from Treasure Planet
-Pie Pizza cheese pull-aparts
-alcohol

This is moving week! Time to get packed up and my last-minute chore list crossed off! As well as spend as much time with friends and family as possible, as well as in the great outdoors of Salt Lake. Ready...set...GO!

.tea.

I've never been one of those huge tea drinkers, like a faithful always-have-tea-in-the-morning-because-I-hate-coffee types of people, but I do like tea and different types remind me of different times in my life.

English Breakfast tea overflowing with milk and sugar reminds me of Cleo's old pioneer house with the green exterior, the huge kitchen filled with plants and overflowing cupboards, and her attic room that spanned the entire house, devoid of air conditioning and filled with the memories of teenaged sleepovers. It reminds me of rainy days and listening to Suzanne Vega, eating homemade grilled cheese sandwiches and dancing around the kitchen. It reminds me of watching movies from the library, Studio Ghibli or Wes Anderson films, and talking an exorbitant amount to the TV.

Instant iced tea, the kind where you pour cold water over a lipton tea bag and only have to wait minutes for it to seep, reminds me of summer. It reminds me of lounging on a blanket in the backyard with a glass, reading a book with Winston cuddled next to me. It reminds me of sitting out on the pontoon with my "hot dog cup" filled to the brim with ice-cubes and lipton, reading a book or magazine and taking photos of the lake. It reminds me of summer and spring afternoons spent at Nostalgia, studying, writing in my journal, or playing SET with my friends.

Earl Grey with honey in it reminds me of Cleo's house near the park, where tea was served on a tray with slices of homemade cake. It reminds me of watching Japanese horror movies and Gone with the Wind and playing with Olivia, her little sister. It reminds me of painting the mailbox with a whale on it and "save the people". It reminds me of light filtering through blanketed windows and black bean quesadillas.

Herbal tea reminds me of being sick. It reminds me of subtle peach flavors, swathing myself in blankets, and watching endless amounts of Netflix as I surround myself in kleenex and Dayquil.

This post has been brought to you by the herbal tea and the sickness accompanying it
:( I had someone take my shift today, which is too bad since I only have two more days at this job anyway. Oh well, time to rest up and watch Bridezillas (trashy TV is my favoriteeee).

Ten Things I Love Monday

I missed it last week because I was too busy traveling to Corpus Christi, Texas! Texas was definitely a life state.

1)

I. GOT. A. JOB. Not just a job though, a full-time, benefitted career that is exactly what I want to do. I am now a trainer/educator for the wild flight bird show at the Texas State Aquarium. I kind of want to cry, basically, I am so so happy about it.

2)

These photos of some of the animals I've worked with made me teary eyed, especially in light of my new job. Storm (the top photo) is such an adorable, lovely bird who was so good (I wrote a lot about her in my superb owl post), and Spike (bottom photo) made me realize that I can deal with mammals, too. Not just birds. And I never thought I could love a porcupine so much ♥

3)

We went out for a super fancy dinner on Sunday night to a restaurant up the canyon called Log Haven. I went ballroom dancing there once in a blizzard, and now I returned to clink champagne glasses with my family in congratulations for our achievements: anniversaries, new jobs, promotions, and great scores on math tests.

4)

Designing homemade valentines was one of my goals for this year, and I'm glad I designed some I really loved! My next goal would be to make them actually "real", like maybe paint them with watercolors.

5)

So cute!

During my visit to the Texas State Aquarium for my interview last week, I spent a lot of time watching their two dolphins swimming around their tank (I struggle with this a little bit, but I'll leave it be for now). I still find that dolphins bring me a lot of joy just by existing, and of course playing with their toys!

6)

Hotel rooms with balconies overlooking the ocean. When I arrived in Corpus Christi at eleven at night, I just wanted to get to my hotel, watch TLC, and crash. However, I was CRAZY HOT. I felt super overheated, which I think was due to my excitement/nervousness, and thought I was going to pass out. Once I got to my room, I was pleased to see I had a sliding glass door that I opened to let in some cool air. I was even MORE pleased aka ecstatic to find it was overlooking THE OCEAN. I stood outside, relishing the refreshing air (it had been raining) and listening to the waves as I let my core cool. I then retreated inside to watch TLC for an hour and fall asleep to the sound of waves lapping at the shore.

7)

Visiting Bird World with my mom! Bird World is a pet store located north of Salt Lake City that Natal and I used to frequent. The staff knew us and allowed us to play with the birds, who we cuddled and cooed at as they climbed all over our sweatshirts and preened our hair. One of my favorite visits was when there was a baby Goffin's Cockatoo :') Also when there were baby Blue-Fronted Amazons, I fell in love. It's hard to go and not come home with one million birds. However, I hadn't been there since I was last there with Natal which was A LONG time ago, so Mom and I went to play with the birds! Unfortunately there were not many babies (except for conures, who are still adorable), but there was a beautiful little female Eclectus and we did cuddle some bunnies and I found some amazing bird toys/perches/playstands (I'm going back to buy one...)

8)

For my Dad's birthday, I painted him a wine glass at Color Me Mine. I made it blue and green and wrote Dad's Special Medicine on it. Basically I'm pretty proud of it.

9)

Margaritas. What else is there to say? This was my drink of choice during my trip to Corpus Christi.

10)

I've been watching The Walking Dead and wow it is addictive. I get bored with the whole "mankind struggling against itself thing" but it is still pretty ominous and good at making me want to watch more! I'm just a quarter of the way through season 2.
